WELCOME TO..... Teens Empowerment World Dance Academy.

Dance as a Part of Life
People have danced since the earliest of human societies. The purposes for dancing are many and varied -- spiritual, social, celebratory, aesthetic, to name just a few. In some cultures, dance is not separated from daily living; the meaning of dance is connected to everyday life. In other cultures, dance for most people is recreational, separate in content and meaning from the work-day world. This unit explores the many relationships between dance and daily living, comparing differences among cultures, both historical and contemporary. You will also have an opportunity for to evaluate dance in your own life and consider the roles it could have in your future.
*       Examine the presence, role, and meaning of dance in your life.
Create a page (or two) in your scrap book that tells what dance means to you.  The use of words, pictures, symbols, stickers, etc… can be used to get your thoughts across.   From this page I should be able to tell what dance means to you.  What is dance?  How do you see dance affecting your life?  Is dance present in your world?  If so, how?
*       Compare the role and meaning of dance in their lives and their grandparents' lives, speculating on reasons for changes.
Interview someone in your life about dance.  What does dance mean to them?   What types of dance were they exposed to during their lifetime?  How does dancing make them feel?  (remember these are questions to guide you – you can create your own questions)
*       Examine the role of dance in various selected cultures, past and present, concentrating on the relationships between dance and aspects of daily living.
We will talk about this one more in depth.
*       Learn cultural dances that had/have meaning closely related to the daily tasks and fundamental beliefs of the people.
Choose a culture from our discussion.  How does dance reflect who they are?  How is dance intertwined in their culture?  (remember these are guiding questions)  A page in your scrapbook will reflect your findings.
*       Explore ritual in dance. What does ritual mean?  Choose one dance that is ritualistic.  Explore the dance, the meaning behind the dance and why the dance is a ritual.  See the attached assignment.
*       Create dances inspired by something in their own daily lives; their part-time jobs, for example.
This would be an example of interpretive dance.  This dance is a minute in length.  One page in your scrapbook should be devoted to your dance and why you chose what you did
